The Very Reverend K Paul Mellor

On Friday 29 May 2026 I was honoured to represent The Probus Club of Salisbury at the funeral service held for our departed friend, Paul Mellor in the company of Phil Gray (President) and Ernie Bohm (Secretary).

The traditional Anglican Communion service was conducted at Salisbury Cathedral and led by The Revd Jules Barnes, Vicar of the Close.

Paul joined Probus in 2022 and members will remember his entertaining thumbnail presentation outlining key milestone moments from his life and career. 

Paul followed his calling in the church to several positions in Cornwall before promotion to Dean and Head of the church in Guernsey in 2003.  In 2014 he moved to Salisbury to his last appointment as Master of St Nicholas Hospital leading subsequently to a well-deserved retirement in our midst.

Paul will be greatly missed.  He was married for well over 50 years to Lindsey and together they raised three sons.  Paul was self-effacing and always ready to greet everyone warmly with a smile and genuine bonhomie.  His natural ability to inspire and uplift others was clear to see – even on casual acquaintance.  We always regret missed opportunities in life and I certainly wish I had more time to get to know Paul better and to benefit from his wisdom and guidance.

The service started with a rendition of “Gabriel’s Oboe” by Ennio Morricone and culminated in an exit to “Thine Be The Glory” to the tune Maccabeus by G F Handel.  A wonderful choice expertly played by David Halls, Director of Music.  A very moving experience amplified within the accoustics of our great Cathedral.
