On Friday 20th January, the Club welcomed Steve Herra to the White Hart. Steve delivered a very entertaining and thought provoking talk about Sweeney Todd, entitled ‘Romance, Riches and Retribution’.
Few if any of us knew much about Sweeney Todd. Steve enlightened us in a captivating presentation encompassing Todd’s early childhood, the depravation and neglect he was subjected to, and some of the potential reasons as to why he behaved as he did in later life. He also introduced us to Mrs. Lovett, and here pie shop!
The story of Sweeney Todd is regarded as myth by most, Steve presented the facts as he had researched them, and left the audience to make up their own minds – all very entertaining! Steve was duly thanked in the customary manner.
Our formal lunch followed, themed for Chinese New Year, the year of the Rabbit. The menu was suitably oriental, and a number of members returned for second helpings!
Toasts to the King and the Club were made, and the President addressed the members with a short talk about the Chinese traditions regarding the year of the Rabbit.
