Salisbury Methodist Church – Friday 2nd December 2022

We were made most welcome at the Salisbury Methodist Church on the 2nd December, to listen to Mike Elkin describe the work of the Salisbury Street Pastors.
Some Fridays and on every Saturday Street Pastors patrol the streets in the centre of Salisbury from 10 pm until 4.00 am in the morning. Street Pastors are trained to be a helping caring and listening presence on our streets (Street Pastors have to complete an extensive training programme).
Often a Street Pastor will sit with someone in distress for half the night, being that shoulder to lean on and a listening ear. Perhaps tending to someone who has had far too much to drink, has been sick and does not even know where they are.
Street Pastors always carry flip-flops, to give to girls who have problems dealing with their high heels (high heels and alcohol do not mix!). Their kit includes bottles of water (to quench the thirst of those dehydrated by alcohol), lollipops, and emergency space blankets. As well as a dustpan and brush to clear up broken glass.
Street Pastors have now been active in Salisbury town centre for over 10years.
Mike explained that the street pastors are volunteers from a number of Christian churches in the surrounding area. Their stated mission is, “care, listen and help” those on the streets within the night-time economy. It is aimed at the vulnerable or those who simply need someone to talk to. Those we help are predominately between 18 and 30. They know that we are all Christians who give unconditional and confidential help, with no strings attached.
They are there to help, not judge, and work closely with the bars and clubs of our City to ensure that our young citizens can have a safe night out and, should things get a little out of control, there is a helping hand not far away.

After the meeting, members retired to the Bell & Crown on Catherine Street (who are always very accommodating) for a light lunch and lighthearted chatter.
